SAFETY FIRST

OK I know that sounds a little corny, but if you don’t cache safely then the odds stack up against you. The odds have a way of sneaking up really fast, when you let them. So as corny as it sounds think "Safety" when leaving the house be it for a cache adventure or just plain going to work.

Next now that we are into the hunting season. WEAR BLAZE ORANGE. I did not wear any blaze the first winter season, and consider myself extremely lucky, now, looking back. I figured ‘it would be their fault’ if I was injured by a hunter. I now realize that was just plain stupid and maybe a bit fatalistic, but stupid none the less. After all they are pointing guns and bows & arrows, potentially fatal if aimed right. WEAR BLAZE ORANGE.

We tend to have a significant number of caches in Wharton and a number of Wildlife Management Areas. These are great places to explore and wander, but they are multi-use areas, which seasonally include HUNTING. I will not get into that sport but some folks take great pleasure and spend significant amounts of money to enjoy their sport. As do we geocachers. So to share the woods during hunting season please WEAR BLAZE ORANGE.

The various blaze orange accessories can be purchased locally at sporting goods stores and being from the South Wal-Mart. Most are very reasonably priced and vests and ponchos start at around a dollar. Of course, you can go all out and spend big bucks and get the absolute best there is, but Ten dollars can get a nice vest and ball cap or wooly hat. Take a minute and ask yourself, ‘Am I worth $10?’ I think a reasonable person would say ‘YES, I AM!’ so spring for the color of the season. WEAR BLAZE ORANGE.

I will go further into detail as far as other equipment that should be in your cache bag and eventually some 4 wheel safety tip as well. Also if you have any suggestions or personal experiences that we all can learn from the ‘shoot’ me an e-mail or PM on the subject.

Thanks for taking time to read this series and taking Your time to cache with US.
