Cache of the Month - Jan 2009

Cache of the Month - January 2009

Mother Knows Best (GC1EKXJ) by Evil Chicken                 Difficulty: 1.5 out of 5      Terrain: 1 out of 5

Every once in a while you come across a cache that makes you stop and think – what a clever idea!  One of those caches that you never forget, and are quick to recommend to others.  I was out doing some "Black Friday" geocaching and planned to meet up with a group of SJG geocachers who were already at GZ.  Should be a quick find, right?  After all, it's only a 1.5 out of 5 difficulty, right?  It would have been a lot easier with the cache sheet (note to future searchers).

Turns out the rest of the crew already "had coffee."  Really.  While the others watched, amused, I searched for the cache.  Fortunately I found it quickly, and soon I was having coffee too.  Geosenses?  Genetics?  Experience?  Osmosis?  Don't know, but there it was.  OK, maybe I had a little help from another mom.

This was the perfect meeting place, and I got a good chuckle with the cache.  It's the kind cache location you don't mind spending some time searching, and can get easily distracted (which could turn this into a ).  You never know what you might find!  A great cache has an interesting location and a clever hide, and "Mother Knows Best" certainly makes the mark.  The next time I'm in Millville, I'm going to have to stop back at GZ to spend a little more time.

You've got to hand it to &.  They certainly can come up with a really creative cache.  One of these days, they should write a book – I bet it would be a best seller!

Cache of the Month Feature

The Cache of the Month Committee is looking for nominations for the next Cache of the Month (COTM) from the South Jersey Geocaching membership.  The candidate cache must be an active cache in South Jersey (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties).  Consideration of nearby caches outside this area is on an exception basis.

The selection process is the following:

• Caches can be nominated by either posting a note on a SJG forum thread, or by sending a note to one of the committee members
• The committee will review the nominations and select the Cache of the Month

• The cache will be written up and presented on the SJG site
• Shameless self-promotion of your own caches is permitted
• Old caches and new caches alike can be nominated
• Active caches only, please.  Not much point to highlighting a cache that is no longer around or out of commission
• Large and small caches can be considered.  We are just looking for caches with that "wow" factor.

The Cache of the Month is meant to highlight those fun, out-of-the-ordinary, standout caches so that all the members of the club can get an opportunity to learn about these caches and visit them.

The Committee

The Cache of the Month Committee consists of the following cachers:

• CC Cachers
• Grunriese
• GuentherGal
• Frodo (but he won't admit it)
• Your name here?

Feel free to contact any of the committee members if you have any questions.  We are inventing the process as we go so your indulgence will be appreciated.  Feel free to make comments and suggestions!  As with any new process, it will change and evolve as we go.  So please think about those special caches you have visited and would recommend to your friends, and consider nominating them for Cache of the Month.
