Cache of the Month - March 2009

Wierd N.J.? (GC1FGCR) by hndlbr                  Difficulty: 1.5 out of 5      Terrain: 1 out of 5

Guest Contributor:  ODragon

February is the shortest month of the year, one of the coldest, and the month of my birth.  In honor of all of this (or maybe everyone was feeling lazy and time was running short), I was asked/told/forced into writing this month's cache of the month. Edit: the month ran out and this will run in March but hey, it is still a good way to start a CoTM article.

Being from North West South Jersey (read Philadelphia), a decent amount of NJ falls under the closest caches, and I get out to do them as often as I can.  I was out recently and did this cache and really enjoyed it.

I find it appropriate that I would pick a cache of the month by an owner who also lives in Pennsylvania.  Wierd N.J.? (GC1FGCR) by hndlbr is a two-stage multi with the first stage having the coordinates to the final stage.  It did what I cache for, and took me to an interesting spot (at the final) and showed me something I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

The first stage was typical hndlbr style.  What is hndlbr's style you ask?  It is clever and makes you think about your surroundings.  Where would I hide the coordinates?  It took Rachel and me a minute to put two and two together but we found the well-hidden coordinates.  We went onto the final and found that without an issue.

I recommend waiting to do this cache in the spring and summer when all of the fountains are running and lights are on.  We talked to the owner of the house and he is very proud of his creation and loves that people are visiting it.  I plan to make a special trip to check it out when it is running!

Editors Note:  Yes, we know "Wierd N.J.?" has a weird spelling.  Goes well with the theme.

Cache of the Month Feature

The Cache of the Month Committee is looking for nominations for the next Cache of the Month (COTM) from the South Jersey Geocaching membership.  The candidate cache must be an active cache in South Jersey (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties).  Consideration of nearby caches outside this area is on an exception basis.

The selection process is the following:

• Caches can be nominated by posting a note on a SJG forum thread, or by sending a note to one of the committee members
• The committee will review the nominations and select the Cache of the Month

• The cache will be written up and presented on the SJG site
• Shameless self-promotion of your own caches is permitted
• Old caches and new caches alike can be nominated
• Active caches only, please.  Not much point to highlighting a cache that is no longer around or out of commission
• Large and small caches can be considered.  We are just looking for caches with that "wow" factor.

The Cache of the Month is meant to highlight those fun, out-of-the-ordinary, standout caches so that all the members of the club can get an opportunity to learn about these caches and visit them.

The Committee

The Cache of the Month Committee consists of the following cachers:

• CC Cachers
• Grunriese
• GuentherGal
• Frodo (but he won't admit it)
• Your name here?

Feel free to contact any of the committee members if you have any questions.  We are inventing the process as we go so your indulgence will be appreciated.  Feel free to make comments and suggestions!  As with any new process, it will change and evolve as we go.  So please think about those special caches you have visited and would recommend to your friends, and consider nominating them for Cache of the Month.
