Once in a while, DRTrack and I find a cache that is truly memorable, that makes us think, and is a ball of fun besides.  The Pirates of the Rancocas Cache (GC1P02Q), by Lost Patrol, was the highlight of our caching day recently.  This is where our story begins …

This cache is located in Rancocas Woods.  Rancocas State Park, in Burlington County in Mt. Laurel, NJ, is a lovely park.  There are miles of trails to explore.  The Audubon Society operates a nature center with in the park, and is worth a visit.  The park is divided into three sections by the North and South Branches of the Rancocas Creek.

After doing a few nearby caches, we began our walk to the first stage.  After looking around a bit and using the hint, we found what we were looking for.  But what’s this?  There are multiple signs (or clues), and which one should we pick?  We must pick the correct one to arrive at the final location!  We looked them over carefully.  After some discussion we plugged in the coordinates that our intuition told us, and we began our journey to the second stage.  But we had second thoughts.  Did we pick the right sign?  You may want to go back and look at the first stage again.  Maybe you should write down more than one sign, in case the first one doesn’t work out.

Our walk to the second and third stages was on scenic wooded trails and mostly flat terrain.  For the second stage we split up and looked on opposite sides of the trail.  Using the clue as our guide, we initially came up empty, and then went back to expand our search a little.  Ahoy, there! There it is!  So, this is the tool that will help us get on our way!  We laughed when we saw what it was.  Now, what do have to do here?  Once we arrived at the third stage, we needed to look for a certain object.  That would assure us we were in the vicinity of the final treasure.

Some light bushwhacking will lead you to the third stage.  Due to the available light in the forest, it may be hard to spot.  Once you locate the third stage you will know what to do, to locate the well-hidden final.

The pirate theme was prominently displayed and it was obvious that a lot of time and thought was put into creating this cache.  Even the log book was in the pirate theme.  This was one of the best multicaches we have done in a long time.  This cache should be on everyone’s list.  Here are some recent logs from this cache:

Marybeast:  Arrrrr matey! (Sorry, not enough testosterone to speak proper Pirate!) That was one mighty fine treasure you stashed there! We had lots of fun at each of the stages and it took the three of us (me and Mr and Mrs Aufbau) to find it.

Aufbau: This is the best cache I've done in a long time. Well thought out with obviously a lot of time and effort expended to create a great multi.
Each stage was very cool and we had a lot of fun. We spent lots of time checking out the treasure and grabbed our well deserved coins!
The final cache was well hidden and very nicely stocked and the theme was great
…. It is obvious that a lot of work and care was put into this cache and its definitely going on my recommended caches list. This is one of the best and most creative multi caches I have done in a long time.

Cache of the Month Feature

The Cache of the Month Committee is looking for nominations for the next Cache of the Month (COTM) from the South Jersey Geocaching membership.  The candidate cache must be an active cache in South Jersey (Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties).  Consideration of nearby caches outside this area is on an exception basis.

The selection process is the following:

• Caches can be nominated by posting a note on a SJG forum thread, or by sending a note to one of the committee members
• The committee will review the nominations and select the Cache of the Month

• The cache will be written up and presented on the SJG site
• Shameless self-promotion of your own caches is permitted
• Old caches and new caches alike can be nominated
• Active caches only, please.  Not much point to highlighting a cache that is no longer around or out of commission
• Large and small caches can be considered.  We are just looking for caches with that "wow" factor.

The Cache of the Month is meant to highlight those fun, out-of-the-ordinary, standout caches so that all the members of the club can get an opportunity to learn about these caches and visit them.

The Committee

The Cache of the Month Committee consists of the following cachers:

• CC Cachers
• Grunriese
• GuentherGal
• Frodo (but he won't admit it)
• Your name here?

Feel free to contact any of the committee members if you have any questions.  We are inventing the process as we go so your indulgence will be appreciated.  Feel free to make comments and suggestions!  As with any new process, it will change and evolve as we go.  So please think about those special caches you have visited and would recommend to your friends, and consider nominating them for Cache of the Month.
